Trout Fishing Tips – For the Advanced Angler
By Trevor Kugler
In this article I’m going to outline some trout fishing tips for the advanced angler. For those of you who have experience trout fishing, these tips will help you start to catch more and larger trout. These tips have helped me hook and land many large trout over my past 25 years of trout fishing. I spend 90% of my trout fishing time fishing in the flowing waters of rivers and streams, so that’s where I know these tips are the most effective.
When it comes to taking your trout fishing to the next level, there are no magic formulas, lures, or devices that will accomplish the task. As a matter of fact, in my experience what’s most important is paying attention to detail and concentrating on the task at hand. It was Vince Lombardi who said, "The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand." This quote can easily be employed to trout fishing, especially when it comes to the advanced angler.
Staying focused on the task at hand means paying attention to detail. The advanced trout angler should pay attention to detail. What does this mean? Things like your fishing line, keeping your spinning reel clean, keeping your hooks sharp, checking your knots, presenting bait naturally, and always wearing clothing that blends into the surroundings are some of the details that must be paid attention to. The advanced trout anglers needs to realize that these types of details are all things that will cost you trout if you’re not focusing on them.
Let’s start with your fishing line, knots, and spinning reel. All of these items should be maintained. How? If you’re fishing line is more than a couple of months old, it needs to be changed. Of course I’m assuming that you are using fishing line that’s as light as possible, right? Of course you are, and light line should be changed often, every month or so in my experience. Your knots should be tied carefully, and examined carefully after every landed trout. This is a great trout fishing tip. Your spinning reel should greased and cleaned at least once a trout season. If these details aren’t paid attention to they will cost you a trophy when you least expect it. I know this to be true from experience, unfortunately.
Now for keeping your hooks sharp and presenting your bait naturally. When it comes to trout fishing tips, these tips are extremely effective for the advanced trout angler. Keeping your hooks sharp is important not only for enabling the hook to hold during the fight, but equally as important for the initial hook set. The bottom line is that having sharp hooks is vitally important to the advanced angler. This can be accomplished by carrying a hook sharpener or changing your hooks after every couple of trout.
Presenting bait naturally is accomplished by employing gang hooks. Gang hooks are a pair of small hooks tied in tandem that enables you to present trout bait (especially worms) in a completely natural manner. When it comes to trout fishing tips this might be the most important to the advanced angler. The implementation of gang hooks can help take you trout fishing to the next level.
Remember to not overlook the simple things, and have patience. I’ve had many occasions where I’ve fished a stretch of river or hole for over an hour without a bite, and then hooked and landed a trophy trout. This is another reason why we need to pay attention to detail. The biggest fish are often hooked when we least expect it.
