In this article were going to discuss some major considerations as to the reasons why fish bite. There are obviously many reasons that a fish may or may not bite your offering, and in this article were going to discuss some of the most prevalent. Are these the only reasons, of course not, but they are nonetheless very important as to why fish bite. Use this information to your advantage as an angler and you’ll start to see much more fishing productivity.

To understand the reasons why fish bite, it’s necessary to try to "think" like a fish. In other words, would you try to eat something that didn’t look natural? Probably not. And would you eat something when you really don’t feel like it? Probably not. How about when you are scared or upset? Would you be worried about eating in this situation? I would argue probably not.

So why would we expect a fish to bite our bait or lure during any of the above situations. We probably shouldn’t. The good thing about this is that by understanding the reasons why fish bite, we can tip the odds into our favor. Fishing is much more about preparation and study than blind luck. So what are some of the reasons why fish bite?

  • Because Of What They See – Obviously fish will bite because what they are looking at looks like the food they normally eat. This is why we want to use lures that look as much like natural quarry as possible. Sometimes color variations make a difference, but as a general rule the fishing lure that’s used should be the same general shape as the types of food in the water we are fishing. For the live bait anglers out there, this is why small hooks should be employed. The less visible your hooks are to the fish, the more bites you will relieve.
  • Because Of What They Smell – One of the reasons why fish bite is because of what they smell. Fish have a very sensitive sense of smell and if they detect unnatural odors on the item they’re about to eat, guess what? They will tend not to try to eat it! If you want fish to bite, you should make sure that your bait or lure is free of any unnatural odors. A way to accomplish this is to spray your bait or lure with any of the attractants on the market
  • .Because Of How They Feel – Things like the weather & moon have an incredible impact on how fish "feel". This is one of the major reasons why fish bite is how they "feel" because of what either the weather or moon is doing. Learn the simple ways that these two forces of Mother Nature impact fishing and you will start catching more fish, it’s as simple as that.

Were the reasons just outlined the only reasons why fish bite? By no stretch of the imagination, however they are some of the more simple to understand and use to your advantage as an angler. As with most endeavors in life, fishing can be as simple or complex as you like. And many times, just as in life, in fishing the simplest things are the most effective.
