Fall Fishing – Tips and Techniques to Catch More Fish

The fall is the best season of the year for fishing in my opinion for many reasons. In the fall many people tend to forget about fishing and start concentrating on activities like football and hunting. This is a big mistake. Fall fishing can be the best fishing of the entire year, and in this article I’m going to outline some tips and techniques to help you catch more fish in the fall.

The first thing to keep in mind in the fall of the year is that the weather can change quite quickly. This is important for two reasons; first when the weather changes the fishing changes and second when the weather changes the conditions change. As an angler you want to know how changes in the weather affect fishing, and how you can use this information to your advantage. As an angler you also want to be prepared for weather changes that include temperature changes in the fall of the year. This is why fall fishing should always involve a pair of fingerless gloves.

For many fall fishing techniques having your fingers unfettered is of the utmost importance. This is where fingerless gloves come onto play. This way your hands can stay somewhat warm, while your fingers are free for tying knots, feeling your line, and baiting up. A quality pair of fingerless gloves will become your best friend whenever you go out and enjoy some fall fishing.

Anytime you talk about fall fishing you need to mention live bait. One of the best things to use as bait in the fall of the year is live bait and when you use live bait you should be using gang hooks, especially if you’re using live worms. A live worm or minnow rigged on a set of pre-tied gang hooks, and allowed to flow naturally with the current of a river or stream is a deadly combination in the fall of the year. This is a fabulous fall fishing technique for all of you river and stream anglers.

The next technique for fall fishing is to use the moon to your advantage. By using the moon to your advantage and planning your fishing trips accordingly you will be much more productive on the water. This may be the most important fall fishing tip in this article. Did you know that the fishing is better during certain phases of the moon? It’s true, and being on the water in the fall when the moon is full is a great idea, I promise you. Learn how moon phases affect fishing and your fall fishing trips will be much more productive.

These fall fishing tips and techniques will help any angler catch more fish. Give on or all of them a try and find out for yourself just how effective they are. The fall truly is the best time of year to be on the water, and the scenery’s usually not to bad either. It’s usually a good deal all the way around.

No matter what technique you decide to use when fishing for smallmouth, it's important that your lure or bait is free of unnatural scents. It has been scientifically proven that these bass have an amazing sense of smell and can detect very minute scents in the water. If the scents that the smallmouth detect are in any way unnatural, they are much less apt to bite. If for some reason you have unnatural scents on your hands, these scents will transfer to your bait or lure and cost you bites.

The next key to success when fishing for smallmouth is to always make sure that you are fishing at the most opportune times. How do you determine when the most opportune times to be fishing are? Simply by learning the simple ways that the weather and moon impact fish behavior, and thus fishing. No truer words may have ever been spoken and I can vouch for the fact that said line can be razor thin!

In this article I'm going to provide you with 3 tips to catch big bass, tips that can be employed by most any angler. When I refer to the term big bass, I'm referring to smallmouth bass that are four pounds and over and largemouth bass that are eight pounds and over.

In my more than 25 years of fishing experience I've found that fishing is just like life. The simplest things are often the most effective. I think Phillip James Bradley said it best, when he said, "Simplicity is nature's first step, and the last of art." If you want to catch big bass, remember, keep it simple.

  • Keep Your Hands Clean – If you want to catch big bass, you need to make sure that you hands are free of unnatural scents. Bass have a very keen sense of smell and can detect even minute amounts of unnatural scents in the water. Before baiting up, no matter what type of bait or lure you choose to use, make sure that your hands are free of any unnatural scents because those scents will transfer to your bait or lure and cost you bites. Odor neutralizing soaps do the trick, as well as grabbing a handful of dirt and rubbing it into your hands before rigging up.
  • Be On The Water At The Right Times – To catch big bass you have to be on the water when the bass are the most active. This is accomplished by learning the simple ways that the weather & moon affect fishing. These two forces of Mother Nature have as much to do with you catching big bass as the type of bait or lure you choose to use. Be on the water at the right times and you will catch more and bigger bass, it's as simple as that.
  • Use Realistic Bass Lures – When it comes to big bass, realism is of the utmost importance. The fishing lure that you use needs to look as realistic as possible. If you're going to catch big Bass the lure you use needs to look as much like what the bass normally eat as possible. Big bass got that way for a reason. They have "been around the block", if you will, so realistic bass lures are very important.

These 3 tips to catch big bass have been proven through more than 25 years of fishing experience, and will work for anyone. Never forget about the old adage about patience either. The more time you can spend on the water, the more successful you will be. Before you know it, you'll be catching trophy sized bass on a regular basis.
